How to Give Back During Pride Month: LGBTQ+ Charities & Non-Profits

Published on Monday June 19th, 2023 by WCED

Pride Month is celebrated by the LGBTQ+ community and its many allies every year in June. One way you can get involved in the event is to donate to one of many charities or non-profits that support LGBTQ+ communities.

Giving doesn’t necessarily need to involve donating cash; you can also donate your time or resources to LGBTQ+ organizations. Many organizations need numerous hours of manpower to advocate for and provide essential services to the LGBTQ+ community. Your time is very valuable. Volunteering to get involved in fundraisers is another impactful way to give, particularly if you are short on cash.

If you are planning to donate to or volunteer at a charity, consider taking some time to educate yourself and learn about the history and struggles of the LGBTQ+ community. Understanding how certain non-profits address the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community will help you become a more informed advocate. Once you educate yourself, you can devote your time or give a donation to nonprofits that you are most passionate about.

LGBTQ+ Non-Profits and Charities

Research reputable organizations and choose the ones that align most with your values. Below are descriptions of a few LGBTQ+ non-profits to consider.

The Trevor Project

The Trevor Project, founded in 1998, addresses disparities in mental health issues for LGBTQ+ youth by providing community resources such as crisis intervention. Donations help fund crisis intervention tools, such as a 24/7 suicide hotline, created specifically for at-risk LGBTQ+ youth, and crisis intervention training sessions for teachers, school counselors, and other professionals who interact with young people regularly.

Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation

One of the most recognizable non-profits supporting LGBTQ+ charities globally is The Human Rights Campaign {HRC} Foundation. The organization is known for its comprehensive approach to health, and wellness for LGBTQ+ people around the world. The HRC Foundation increases awareness and encourages the adoption of LGBTQ+-inclusive policies and practices. HRC makes a difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals and their family members through programs and projects such as HRC’s HIV and Health Equity Program to prevent HIV/AIDS and fight its stigma.

Family Equality Council

As a nonprofit organization, Family Equality has been working toward advancing equality for the LGBTQ+ community. Families and intended parents can find many valuable resources through the Family Equality Council. As part of its many projects, the nonprofit provides information on family building for any individual or couple, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In addition, the organization advocates for laws that protect LGBTQ+ parents from discrimination.

The Ali Forney Center

Nearly 4% of people in the general public identify as LGBTQ+, but in the homeless population, that number is much larger. For example, in New York City, nearly 40% of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ+. Ali Forney Center focuses on LGBTQ+ youth homelessness. The program provides LGBTQ+ youth with emergency and transitional housing, health services, education, and job training.

SAGE

Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) is one of the oldest non-profit organizations serving as an advocacy agency and providing services for LGBTQ seniors. SAGE advocates for a high quality of life and for the rights of LGBTQ+ older people, on local and federal levels. Additionally, SAGE organizes activities, groups, and programs that encourage LGBTQ+ older adults to stay in touch with each other and their community. SAGE is one of the few non-profits that help older LGBTQ+ adults with issues such as finding affordable housing, navigating the transition into assisted care facilities, and accessing senior care.

Happy Pride from West Coast Egg Donation

As a leading egg donation agency based in California, West Coast Egg Donation is proud to be a strong advocate and supporter of the LGBTQ+ community. We firmly believe that donating to and volunteering with LGBTQ+ causes and organizations is one of the most effective ways to uplift and bring about positive change in this community.
